FAQS (Read this First.)

Hi folks. We’ve been getting a lot of similar questions and gadje whines, so I thought I’d do up an FAQ.

  • But this is not racist because it’s fashion/art!

Um, I hate to break it to you but art can be racist. So can fashion. You’re dressing up as another culture.  I don’t feel ‘honoured, celebrated or respected.’ I feel like a bunch of gadje are stamping their feet because I want to be respected as a person.

  • But the dictionary says-

    No. No. No.
  • But this organization and that organization and these other places use the word ‘Gypsy’! I can’t be racist.

Ok, but you are. See, A walking person, actually a bunch of walking people are telling you that word is a slur. It’s a slur.

  • But you call yourself a gypsy!

That’s because as a walking person, I can reclaim that slur. You, as a gadje, can’t.

  • Aren’t you racist for calling me ‘gadje’?

Gadje literally means ‘outsider’ or ‘Non Rroma.’ I call you that because most of you think it’s ok to refer to us as a monolith. So I will do the same to you.

  • But I didn’t mean to do a racist thing and offend you!

I believe you. I do. But intent doesn’t really matter to me and I am not here to absolve you. It also doesn’t change the fact you did a racist thing. So fix the racist thing, and reflect, and then think about a real apology.

  • Can you tell me XYZ about your culture, this word, etc?

Sometimes I will, or I will publish your asks if I think someone out there will be happy to tell you, but typically, I’m not interested. You have access to google. Most of the questions you ask me are easily searchable on the internet, and we are not here are a database of Walking People Information for Gadje. Firstly, my experiences as a walking person are limited to my family. Secondly, I just don’t want to educate gadje about my culture every ten minutes. It’s not my responsibility to educate you and if you were serious about your anti-oppression work you would understand that.
  • Why is the word ‘gypsy’ racist?

Bros, come on. We’ve gone over it a hundred times. Read back on the blog, or google that shit.
